Optimum Feedback - Top Online Review Sites

List of Top Online Review Sites That Actually Matter

In Reputation Management, Reviews & Feedback, Small Business Marketing by Bryan O'Neil0 Comments

There are thousands of review sites online. They range from the “monsters” like Google, Yelp and TripAdvisor to thousands of site’s that you’ve probably never heard of. This makes the landscape difficult to navigate.

Today, we’re taking a look at which review sites matter the most based on the business you’re in. And this is important, as the review sites that you should focus on is widely different for restaurant owners and hoteliers, as opposed to carpet cleaners and pest control professionals.

Courtesy of BrightLocal, you will find a comprehensive list of review sites categorized based on industries at the bottom of this post. But let’s first explore what type of sites we’re dealing with in the fist place.

Different Types of Review Sites

The Big Three

It’s probably not a surprise to anyone that when it comes to review sites, Yelp, Google and Facebook tend to dominate the market, regardless of the industry you’re in.

These sites are so popular that regardless of whether you sell copiers, provide mortgage consulting or fix computers, odds are that many of your potential customers will look you up on one of these sites.

This means that virtually every business in the US (but also several other countries) needs to be present on the Big Three, and make sure to monitor their reviews to avoid a negative review hurting their business.

Industry-specific Review Sites

While the Big Three are bigger and generally more important than any other review site on the planet, some industries do have review sites specific to the industry in question. Often, these sites are as important as the big ones, as a large percentage of your clients are likely to look for you there.

Some good examples are Lawyers.com and Avvo.com for lawyers and attorneys, Edmunds.com for auto dealerships, TripAdvisor and OpenTable for restaurants and bars and WebMD for the medical industry.

These sites should never be ignored, as the type of customers looking for you there, as opposed to Yelp or Google, is usually highly motivated to buy.

“Wannabe” Review Sites

Probably the largest group of review sites by quantity, but the least important one at the same time, is what we call the “wannabe” sites.

That’s the thousands of review sites out there that try to capitalize off of Yelp and Google’s success, not realizing that it’s much more difficult than it may seem.

While these sites often seem to have a lot of business listings and even reviews, there’s usually not much traffic coming to the sites and, in most cases, their reviews are “scraped” from other sites like Yelp or Google.

We’re not going to list any of these sites as it’s simply not worth it and there are far too many, but a fool-proof giveaway that you’re dealing with a wannabe site is if you see them list reviews that have already been posted on Google or Yelp, or if the site has a lot of business listings but very few reviews.

Hybrid Review Sites

Finally, we have what we call the Hybrid Review Sites. These are sites that aren’t review sites by trade, but offer customer reviews as a part of their primary service.

By far the most popular group of hybrid sites is hotel booking sites like Booking.com, Hotels.com, Expedia and many others. The primary purpose of these sites is offering booking services, but they also gather customer reviews.

You also have an entirely different group of hybrid sites in the ecommerce space. Sites like Amazon, eBay, Walmart Marketplace and others let you use their platform as a sales mechanism, but also allow customers to review your products directly on the site.

Depending on your industry, these sites can be an absolute goldmine, as many of them consider reviews (both the quantity AND quality) an important data point for deciding how prominently your business or your products are displayed on the site.

At the same time, they’re among the most difficult to monitor and manage, as they often have proprietary systems and sometimes don’t even give out your own customers’ contact details, to be able to talk to them about reviews.

The Full List of Online Review Sites That Matter

Now that we’ve looked at different types of review sites and why they’re important, here’s the full list of sites that you should check out depending on the business you’re in.

Note that we’re only listing free review sites, as we don’t believe you should ever pay to have your business listed on a review site.

Bottom Line

As you can see, that’s a lot of review sites, depending on the business you’re in.

We’re not saying that you need to actively monitor every single one of them, but it’s incredibly important to check them from time to time, and make sure that your business profile is complete on each.

With Optimum Feedback, you can also monitor the majority of these sites automatically and even get email notifications every time a new review appears on any of the sites. If you’re interested, you can schedule a free 15-minute demo with us and we’ll show you how it works!
